FIM Backup / Restore / DR Stragegy

$

I need some help with figuring out how and backup and more importantly, restore a FIM environment (the backup is 100% useless if the restore doesn't work).

I have two real world occurrences that really make be nervous about relying on this to replace what we currently use for IDM (Novell).  I simply can't afford for this to be down for very long.

1)  When I did the FIM and BHOLD installs, I mistaken installed the BHOLD under my account (it's in the admin group) instead of administrator.  Yeah, I'm a dumbass for doing that, but...  That screwed up the BHOLD installation royally.  BHOLD doesn't un-install cleanly.  I actually think there's a comment buried in some install documents that states it can't be uninstalled using programs and features.  That leaves me no option but to rebuild the server.  That's a 8+ hour water-boarding exercise.  Having no other option, I tried to uninstall BHOLD via programs and features anyway.  After that process and a reboot, the FIM Service wouldn't start.  And, googling FIM Service won't start yields results that are less the useless.

2)  I HAD a fully functional FIM/BHOLD system, with an HR system feeding users, BHOLD managing groups and everything in AD working properly.  I had a request to setup a way to manage service accounts and vendor/contractor accounts (personnel not in HR) via the FIM portal.  I created a new object type called ServiceAccount, based on the user account and configured one RCDC for that object type.   After getting that RCDC working (another water-boarding session), I copied it two times, renamed them for editing and viewing, and imported them into FIM.  All that worked fine.  But, the next time I went to update the view RCDC (setting all the attribtue to read-only), the RCDC that is used to import/export/view RCDCs was throwing an invalid RCDC error, contact your system adminstrator message and displaying the default RCDC (which is of no use).  WTF!  I never even touched that RCDC, never planned on touching that RCDC and had no backup of that RCDC.  I thought I could restore the FIMService database from a backup and recover.  So, I stopped the FIMService (I have to break all connections to the DB to restore it).  After the restore, the FIMService won't start.  And, googling FIM Service won't start yields results that are less the useless.

So, I'm looking for a 100% positive (ok, I'll settle for 95% way) to recover a FIM installation.  I'm using a remote DB server.  I simply can't move forward with something so fragile and poorly documented.  I'm aware of the powershell scripts used to export/compare and import configurations.  I'm aware the import and export capabilities in the sync service app.  I'm aware of the VM snapshotting capabilities.  And, I'm aware of the DB backup and restore capabilities.  I'm using TFS to manage versions of RCDCs and my use that to manage the exports from these powershell scripts.

Thanks,

Greg

Pass PowerShell output to a WorkflowData parameter

$

Hi,

Is it possible to assign a array to WorkflowData parameter?

Also how do we assign an output from a powershell to workflowdata parameter so that this value can be used in email notification. I see that we have 3 options for the Script Return Type parameter. I used "Single Value"  and in the Return Value Look up I gave something like [//WorkflowData/PowershellOutput].

I tried using this [//WorkflowData/PowerShellOutput] in the body of the email notification template but it doesn't seem to get populated with any value when I receive the mail notification.

In the eventViewer it gives a warning message as below

Cannot reference specified workflow data parameter:System as it does not exist within the dictionary.

Can someone help me here?

Thanks,

Veena

Hi All

We are on FIM 2010 R2  V 4.1.3496.0

The scenario is,

1. Requestor raises multiple create resource requests
2.Approver selects all the requests in FIM portal and approves them in one go
3. All the requests fail except one (random one)
4. Event log shows following errors

If the approver approves the requests one by one then no issues and they all complete successfully. Any ideas or pointers?

Anyone seen this SQL deadlock errors before?

FIM 2010 R2 Web Services Connector Password change usage

$

Hello!

I am working on a project using the FIM Connector for Web Services ( https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29944 ) , and there is something I'd like to know:

The Connector for Web Services includes functionality for changing and setting a Password, and as far as I know, most implementations involve synchronizing AD with SAP or similar products, and using PCNS to notify password changes to FIM, which are then handled by the MA (the connector for webservices).

¿What if instead of having AD as a source of authority with PCNS we have a database with user data? ¿how could we notify the Connector for WebServices that the password was changed for a database user, so it can be processed and updated on the target system?

FIM SSPR OTP Email are not getting triggered

Hi All,

I have configured this OTP Email services in one of my Test lab environment and It was working fine earlier and all of the sudden one day I tried to reset password for one test User I got error: "Unable to send OTP" contact your Admin. I looked into server event log and found below error coming up continuously:

System.Web.Services: System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.
at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall)

   at Microsoft.ResourceManagement.WebServices.Mail.Exchange.MailChannel.ExchangeMailChannelListener`1.ExchangeMailListener.<OnPollTimerExpired>b__0(Boolean findUnreadItems)
   at Microsoft.ResourceManagement.WebServices.Mail.Exchange.MailChannel.ExchangeMailChannelListener`1.ExchangeMailListener.OnPollTimerExpired(Object state)

AND

The Forefront Identity Manager Service cannot connect to the Exchange Web Service.

The connection failure may be due to a network failure, firewall configuration error, or other connection issue.  Additionally, the failure may be due to incorrect Exchange Web Service configuration.

Verify that the Exchange Web Service is reachable from the Forefront Identity Manager Service computer.  Ensure that Exchange is running, that the network connection is active, and that the firewall is configured properly.  Last, ensure that the Exchange Web Service configuration is correct in the Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Service.exe.config file.

Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Installing FIM Reporting on a dual FIM Service (with load balancer) environment. Must FIM reporting be put on both?

$

We have 2 FIM Service servers with a load balancer directing requests to one either or both as it feels like. Both FIM Servers use the same SQL Instance on a separate SQL server. This is OK for FIM requests and Portal accesses.

Now customer wants FIM Reporting. I have installed SCSM and SCDW, registered and all Management Packs are complete. Ready for FIM Reporting install and post-install procedures.

It is not clear what to do.

Do I just pick ONE of the two FIM Service servers and install FIM Reporting on it and in post install refer back to that one... or what?

Is there a technet article explaining how to manage FIM Reportage in this kind of environment?

app-store-import-exception / Event 6500 / Delta Import cannot be run as the change log has been detected to be in a corrupted state

$

Hi

After removing a few attributes and bindings from the FIM Service, I am no longer able to perform Delta Imports on the FIM MA.

When i do Delta Imports I get app-store-import-exception and the Application log shows Event 6500 and the log entry contains the error description "Delta Import cannot be run as the change log has been detected to be in a corrupted state"

The deleted attributes were removed from any filter permissions and MPRs prior to deletion from the FIM Schema. Afterwards I did a schema refresh with the MA.

The attributes were never synchronized with the Metaverse.

Full imports works without any problems, by delta imports fails with the error as described above.

We are running FIM 2010 R2 build 4.1.3451.0.

Anybody knows how to fix the problem and/or recover from the change log corruption? I assumed that running a Full Import would reset any change log, but this is apparently not the case.

Best regards

Søren

I currently run IIFP for Galsync on a Windows 2003 server to sync contacts from other agency galsync servers. Now that Server 2003 will no longer be supported after July 15th, can IIFP be installed on a Windows 2008 Standard server for now until I can upgrade to FIM or is there another alternative?

FIM CM Smart Card Masterkeys

$

Hello everybody,

I have a question regarding to FIM CM. Currently I´m implementing FIM CM in our customers infrastructure and everything works like it should :-).

But there was a question coming up regarding Smart Card Masterkeys. Does anybody know how FIM CM handle this keys? I´ve never heard about them.

To clarify my question:

-we have the User PIN with which the user authenticates itself together with the Smart Card

-we have the Admin PIN also known as PUK for Smart Card initialization and Challenge/Response to reset the PIN of the Smart Card

-then there should be a Masterkey, which I´ve never heard. Our customer claims, that anybody whom has this Masterkey has full control over the Smart Card and he wanted to know if FIM CM randomizes this key or whatever it does with it.

Can anybody answer this question for me or clarify this PIN/PUK/KEY Chaos?

Thank you very very much in advance!

Tom

I'm stuck while installation of FIM patches. Our current build is of 4.1.3419 and I'm trying to install the patch 4.1.3441.0 and getting error as "Forefront Identity Manager Service and Portal Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error." Even tried directly to install the patch 4.1.3451.0 but got the same error message.

Additional Query : Is there need to install all the patches or we can directly jump over to the 4.1.3634.0?

Manuj Khurana

FIM Group Members visiblity

I would like to limit Group Members being displayed to regular users during group request to only see themselves during the request; while group owner would continue to see the full list of members.

Our client requirements is that a regular user of a group should only see his/her user name in the members and not all members.  Is there a way for me to achieve this?

Thanks.
